Shattered Star #87: Mum’s the Word

At the end of last session, we left our heroes advancing further into the dungeon below Windsong Abbey to escape a particularly pernicious trap…

In short order, most of the party had rushed into the room with the large pillar and the glowing runes. As they did so, Makani arrived—recovered form the teleport-induced sickness and set to disarming the trap.

While he was doing this, Karelia deciphered the writing on the central pillar, but unfortunately read the inscription aloud, which included Demogorgon’s two names. The weight of ages seemed to descend upon the unfortunate wizard and only Heironeous’ divine grace as embodied by Cortana’s healing hands could temporarily suppress the fell lethargy and sluggishness settling over her.

Meanwhile, several of the party noticed the glowing blue lights seemed to be getting stronger and brighter. Karelia identified the lights as guardian creatures—Groetan Candles, a kind of will-o-wisp. The lights were clustered on the ceiling and as they grew stronger and brighter Ausk cunning sealed them away forever behind a wall of stone.
Thus, that danger—at least—was past. Moments later Makani successfully disarmed the trap that had caused so much woe and the party regrouped…but only for a moment.

Pushing further into the complex, Makani scouted ahead. The very next chamber contained four sarcophagi and as the rogue crept through it, their occupants—four mummies—rose to battle the intruder. Battle was joined.

Makani was caught in the chamber, and his companions rushed to help. The four mummies seemed no match for the party, but as they were destroyed more mummies—another eight—emerged to fight the intruders.

By now, the party were somewhat spread out. Karelia all but destroyed four of the mummies with a well-placed fireball and Makani rushed to finish them off. As he did so, he discovered another passageway leading away to another much larger and more ostentatious burial chamber.

Within stood an imposing mummy. At that moment, Makani’s invisibility failed and the creature called out, “ Halt. I am Kandamereus and you can go no further.” Moments later, Shardane reached Makani and the battle entered a new, dangerous phase. Shardane discovered that some kind of field prevented her from reaching the mummy. She hurled powerful bolts of magical fire at the creature, but they simply fizzled out doing no damage. As they did so, three shadows suddenly appeared in the midst of the party…
