98: Into the Giants’ Lair

At the end of last week’s session, we left the PCs revelling in their triumph after Makani stole the Shard of Wrath from under the giant chieftain’s nose!

 

Resting overnight, the party plotted their next move. Vesleng wanted to travel east to the Timberway to recruit more help. Over the next few days, he engaged in various nature-based doings including summoning a treat ally and crafting himself a new staff.

Meanwhile, Karelia used her powerful scrying magic to keep an eye on the giants. She reported the theft of the chieftain’s club seemed to have caused much anguish and strife among the giants. The next night, Ariquis—preparing an ambush site for when the party drew the giants out of the steading—reported the giants had begun fighting one another!

The party were delighted. It seemed they might not have to fight their way through a steading full of enraged giants after all!

The next day, the heroes approached the steading. Unchallenged, they passed easily through the gate and reached the steading without incident. Dead giants and burnt mastodon corpses carpeted the floor—clearly there had been a great struggle here. Inside the steading lay more dead. Even the fire giantess warrior Karelia had spotted with her scrying skills had been slain—her head squashed flat in a frenzied attack.

The heroes quickly searched the steading and looted some minor treasures. They found no living giants among the slaughter. Reaching the steps leading downwards, the party briefly rested and plotted their next move.

The object of their quest lay below and so they descended. Passing through several caves obviously once inhabited by giants, eventually they discovered a set of double doors. Briefly preparing for battle—because they could hear deep voices beyond the door—the party surged forward.

They had found the giant chieftain’s subterranean’s lair. Here lurked the chieftain, some of his remaining warriors and his concubines. As the party rushed into the room, battle was joined…
