Borderland of Adventure #4: Against the Kobolds

At the end of last session, the PCs were preparing to move further into the complex after heroically retreating from a strange watery creature that seemed impervious to their weapons.

Before they could breach the door ahead, they heard the clank of armour behind them. Turning, they saw a solitary half-orc approaching. It quickly transpired, that the half-orc – a Klara  follower of the Far Wanderer – was a fellow adventurer here to search for the missing ranger, Karakas, who accompanied Talgen and Sharwyn Hucrele on their ill-fated quest.

  • Klara (female half-orc cleric [Fharlanghn])

With introductions made the party moved on and discovered a large chamber, the main feature of which seemed to be a large, broken cage. Before the cage, lay a slumbering creature wrapped in blankets. Quickly identified as a kobold, it was woken and tied up before being interrogated. It transpired that the kobold was called Meepo and that he was the Keeper of the Dragon (but that the dragon  – a white -had recently been stolen by the goblins lairing to the north). The party gained a fair amount of information from Meepo – that goblins lurked to the north, the kobolds claimed the chambers to the west, that they had recently come here “from below” and that a room to the south housed the thousands of rats that the dragon once fed on. Kemmo also investigated the rent cage and discovered that it was very old and strange patterns lurked in its bars. Learning this, he immediately moved away and refused to approach it again. As the party discussed what to do next, Meepo offered to take the party to see his chieftain, a powerful sorcerer, but he was rebuffed. The party also learned that the adventurers they sought had gone north when they passed through this chamber.

Armed with this knowledge, the party immediately headed west.

A small group of kobolds was surprised and crushed, and this small encounter also led to Meepo’s death as the party believed that he had not warned them. More chambers and rooms were discovered as the party headed further west. Eventually, Krorz discovered a large pillared corridor. Unfortunately, the party’s lights had alerted the kobolds lurking therein and battle quickly broke out. Initially, the party seemed to gain the upper hand, but as more and more kobolds joined the fight, they became sorely pressed. The kobold sorcerer joined the battle and charmed several of the groups, who tried to stop the fight between their two groups of friends after the chieftain offered parley.

After several minutes of hard fighting, only Klara was still fighting, stubbornly refusing all attempts at parley while Belivar retreated to summon monsters to aid in the fight. By then Adoven was unconscious and only saved by Krorz using the party’s only healing potion to bring him back to conscious.

As the fight raged on, the kobolds began to fall and eventually the survivors, led by their chieftain, began to fall back toward a large chamber to the east. Low on healing, spells and health, the party followed. Seeing twenty or thirty kobolds lurking in the room, the party charged forward…
