Borderland of Adventure #49: Tentacles in the Dark

At the end of last session, we left our heroes in a dire situation. The party were trapped in an area of magical darkness by a be-tentacled beast possessing great strength and powerful magic.

Squinty had escaped the beast’s clutches and urged her companions to escape as she had discover the darkness was not as all pervading as first thought. However, her companions were still trapped in the corridor. As Krorz gathered up the vast number of weapons and pieces of equipment dropped in the corridor during the early stages of the battle, Oreal unveiled a powerful magical light that forced the darkness back. As he fled across the bridge, Hemgor finally stirred himself to action and jumping from the bridge hurled himself into the stream there to battle the beast. Seeing this, Adoven moved to cross the bridge but didn’t manage to get across before the creature pushed him into the water.

Adoven sank.

As Adoven struggled to swim with the vast weight of his equipment, Hemgor heroically held off the beast. Half-swimming, half-sinking Adoven managed to swim up the stream and discovered a large, unoccupied chamber. Adoven and Squinty then returned to the battle, peppering the creature with missile fire. Such was the accuracy of the attack, they forced the creature to cover itself in magical mist which gave Hemgor the time to retreat from the stream into the chamber.

The room was huge and had many rooms. Adoven realised that three of the rooms led into the chambers which had the spy holes they found earlier. He retreated into the room and called Hemgor to follow. Hemgor did so and Adoven slammed the door just as the creature smashed up against it. As he desperately held the door shut, he gave Hemgor his adamantine warhammer and suggested Hemgor smash the wall behind them down “****ing quickly”.” By this time, Squinty, Krorz and Oreal had dashed through the dungeon and reached the room with the spyholes. As Hemgor attacked the wall from one side, his companions assaulted it from the other! As the adventurers desperately worked, the door shivered under the monster’s assault.

Just as the door seemed ready to give way, the wall fell and Hemgor and Adoven (the latter just dodging a tentacle) dashed through the hole. Once through, however, Hemgor turned and held the creature at bay so that his companions could escape. Krorz needed no second urging and fled the dungeon as did Squinty but Oreal and Adoven lingered to aid their companion. Finally, Hemgor began a slow withdrawal, but as he seemed on the verge of reaching safety the creature struck him down. At that, Adoven and Oreal leaped forward, calling for their companions to return. A barrage of missile fire finally began to tell and by now the creature was badly wounded. Just as it seemed the party might actually prevail, it fled back into the cellar.

Quickly healing their fallen companion, the party retreated to the relatively safety of the village above. There, Hemgor fell into a deep depression declaring that he was done with Tumbledown and that the kidnapped twin would likely be dead before the party could recover enough to mount another expedition. However, Oreal and Adoven finally talked Hemgor round, although Krorz loudly declared they were mad to return…
