Borderland of Adventure #29: Run Away! Run Away!

At the end of last session, we left our heroes lurking in the woods outside Xul-Jarak after sending in Belivar’s eidolon to attack the blue dragon sleeping in the courtyard of the fortress. The attack did not go well and Belivar was forced to dismiss his companion before it was ripped apart by the dragon.

As he began to summon his eidolon back to his side, the dragon roared loudly, sounding the alarm. A minute or so later, the dragon took to the air – a muscular and powerful orc warrior astride its back. Seeing this, the party decided to retreat further into the woods, but the perceptive dragon spotted them and flew toward them. Luckily, a volley of ineffective missile fire served to drive the creature off. While his fellows were shooting at the beast, Maban took a long, hard look at the beast and identified it not as a dragon, but a wyvern. Krorz was less than excited by its reclassification as the party discussed whether this actually improved the situation…

As they argued, a clamour rose up from the woods behind Xul-Jarak as the orcs camping beyond began to swarm through the woods in search of the interlopers. Not wasting any time, the party beat a heroic retreat through the trees, but unfortunately Adoven was spotted by two swiftly moving orc scouts. As Krorz fled, Belivar returned to aid the beleaguered dwarf who was having trouble fighting off his pursuers. Sidal also fled the scene while Klara and Maban made slower progress through the wood. Another orc joined the first two and a running battle developed. Belivar’s eidolon was almost destroyed and Adoven was badly injured before the orcs were finally slain.

Eventually, the rest of the party reached Krorz’s clever hiding place and – their magical resources all but exhausted – they settled in for the night. Mercifully, the night was uneventful. The next morning, the party fell to arguing (again) about what to do next…
