Gloamhold Update

Over the past week, I’ve been working on laying out the Gloamhold Campaign Guide. It’s not close to being finished yet, but I needed to start laying it out so I could work out what additional material I needed to write. It’s a work in progress, which means I have no large Gloamhold article to share this week. What I do have, however, is updates to several Gloamhold pages.

These include:

  • Sinkwebs: A new monster lurking in the Echoes’ far reaches. Designing a new monster without using any statistics was a bit of a challenge (as the Campaign Guide is System Neutral) so let me know what you think of the sinkweb’s flavour. I’ll clearly have to order some art for this creature at some point!
  • The Flaming Lady: A partly sunken wreck well known as a waypoint along the Murkwater’s treacherous and gloomy course. Of course, it’s dangerous…

I’m also working on a proper introduction to the Gloamhold iconics and waiting on some new artwork from the jolly talented Matt Morrow to illustrate them (battling a gelatinous cube, naturally).

Finally, I’m working on Lore sections for each of the main part of the Gloamhold. It stands to reason, after all, that adventurers planning to explore Gloamhold are bound to have picked up some generally assumed facts about the place. Once they are all completed I’ll post them on all the relevant pages.

  1. I *love* the sinkweb! Awesome description. IMO, they shouldn’t be undead – no real reason for them to be. Somehow they seem more scary being sentient living webs.

    1. Thank you! Glad you liked it.

The way I look at it, sinkwebs are animated by the death a d suffering of so many creatures within their threads. I couldn’t come up with a way of making them “natural” or “animals.” If you’ve got a plan for that, I’d happily read it!

      1. Something like “In rare instances, foci of horrible death and suffering can manifest in sentience, getting malevolent will of their own. These vile entities usually inhabit and assume control of the focus in question, creating horrible animated objects, home to an insatiable hunger of evil. One example of such are the sinkwebs of…”?

Maybe they could be aberrations or sentient animated objects?

  2. I really like this creature idea, especially as undead. I kind of wish you were picking a system so that there were stats of some sort to go with it. About what did you have in mind in terms of CR for something like this?

Actually, have you thought about making supplements in a variety of different systems that include stats for new creatures you create along with notable NPCs?

    1. I expect I will create some “Mechanical Appendices”. I’ll likely be running a Gloamhold campaign at home and I’ll–at least–have stats available for whichever system I end up using.

In terms of the sinkweb, I suspect I’d aim for CR 4 or 5 for a normal specimen. Tough enough that a new band of adventurers are going to have a very tough time of it but weak enough that you can advance them or (occasionally) have packs descend on the PCs!

      😉
