The Forge on Patreon

Cartography and mapping are very much in my mind at that moment. I recently discovered an epic new mapping app for my iPad and created a map that wasn’t terrible. I’m hooked on mapping, but I’m also a busy GM. Luckily, there are many sources of ready-to-go maps on the internet.

One such company creating maps for GMs and publishers alike is The Forge. Even better, the Forge have a Patreon campaign focused on making even more of the marvellous artwork and maps for which their company is justifiably famed. I signed up immediately, when they launched their campaign. In fact, for me as the publisher at Raging Swan Press, signing up was a total no-brainer.

I’m a huge fan of old-school style art and maps. At heart, I’m an old fart desperately clinging to the games of my youth and The Forge’s artwork has a fantastic feel to it. Behold this beautiful map:

How cool is that? As part of my pledge I got the map with and without a grid as well as the image at the top of the post. Depending on how much you pledge you can have it for personal or commercial use. That much original art would probably cost me in the region of $120. I got it for $5!

Awesome.

So if you need high quality line art for your campaign or upcoming project, check out the Forge on Patreon! Alternatively, to pick up some of their artwork and maps, check them out at RPGNow.

A Final, Shameless Plug

Patreon has transformed Raging Swan Press (and even had some unexpected but most welcome benefits). If you’d like to learn more about Raging Swan Press’s Patreon (and perhaps even sign up) I’d be delighted to welcome you into the Swan Horde!\

(And in case you were wondering, I get nothing for recommending the Forge on Patreon; I’m simply a huge fan of their work!)

  1. Well, I may be advertising my incompetence, but I could not find a way to ask a creator on Patreon a question without first becoming a Patron… So I’ll ask you, Creighton, since you put a post up for The Forge: How do the grid maps print out? Are you able to size the printout such that the grids are 1″ square (for immediate mini usage)?

If you don’t know, that’s totally fine. I was considering becoming a Patron for them but wanted to know the answer to this first.

    1. The maps are rough A4/letter size so I’m not sure exactly how you’d expand them to mini-size. I’m sorry–I’m not particularly wise in this kind of thing. I’l let Maciej know about this question, though, and hopefully he can post up an answer here.

    2. Thanks Creighton for such nice review of our work and letting me now about this question.

Unfortunately I believe it will be extremely difficult to resize our maps published on PATREON for couple of reasons:
      1) All maps are hand drawn on A4 paper and then scanned
      2) Files available for our Patrons are 600 dpi jpg images but even with such high resolution they could be blurry when enlarged
      3) There are only handful of maps which could be resized – most of the maps are bigger (cities / whole caves/ large dungeons etc. ) and lack proper details to use with minis

The Forge Studios offers some tiles dedicated for minis. Please check our tactical maps line aviliable at our booth on RPGnow. If you have more questions about The Forge Studios patreon campaign or our products you might be interested in our FB page:
