New (Epic) Gloamhold Maps

Last week, I took delivery of some new Gloamhold maps. They are awesome.

These new maps have been a long time in the making. I sent Tommi the design brief–and my own terrible draft maps–several months ago and it’s taken him several versions to get them “right”.

The problems we had with the map were my fault. When I’d initially conceived Gloamhold, I’d sketched out a very long design. Most megadungeons go deep, but not necessarily long. The really good reason for this–as it turns out–is that it’s much easier to represent a deep dungeon than a long one on the page of a book. Try as we might in the initial draft phase we just couldn’t get all of the dungeon on the page without switching the layout of the map to landscape. Given that most books use the portrait orientation that was a bit of a problem.

The breakthrough came when we realised we could simply do the map in a landscape format after all, cut it in half and display it on facing pages! Once we realised this, Tommi was away and the map got finished pretty quickly.

I think you’ll agree, the overview map looks pretty awesome! I wish I could draw with even 1/10th of Tommi’s skill.

So what’s next?

Starting this week, I’m going to go back through my various Gloamhold posts and start clearing up typos and mis-namings as Tommi spotted several of these during our map design. After that, I’ll be storyboarding out the basic Gloamhold Campaign Guide with a view to starting proper design after the summer. I’ll be posting regular updated of my progress here on the blog.

What Do You Think?

What do you like about the map? Is there anything you don’t like? Let me know, in the comments below!

  1. Thank you for your kind words Creighton! This was the first side-view map I’ve ever done, and it was so fun to make! I’m getting really excited about Gloamhold, can’t wait to throw my players there =).

  2. I am so looking forward to give you money

For a lot of Fun playing through the Mountain

  3. The map is awesome and I’m so glad there’s news on the Gloamhold front. I don’t think there’s anything I don’t like. I could be a bit concerned about the adjourning pages thing. Make sure there is also a one page version of the map for A3 or bigger printing. Of course, this overview map needs to be supported by more traditional maps.

I look forward to following the progress of the development.

Please remember to make the dungeon system neutral and and make rules specific supplements instead – or make a Pdf and a 5e version 🙂

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Matrix. I agree the maps look awesome! (And I’ll be sure to include an A3 print-ready file in the final product).

Finally, have no fear–the base document will be system neutral!

  4. I think I can’t wait! I’m pretty excited about the whole thing and enjoy seeing it start to come together!
