Gloamhold: The Duchy of Ashlar Area Map

Several months ago, I shared my tremendously rough first draft of the area around Gloamhold. Since then, the heroic Tommi Salama has been slaving away over a much better version…

Tommi has done a fantastic job on bringing my deranged scribbling to life, and I’m delighted to show off his rather marvellous map.

You’ll no doubt note a couple of changes from my original map, and this might not be the final version of Ashlar. In particular, I’d like to name some more of the small islands, and possibly add in a couple more minor adventure sites.

Additionally, long-time Raging Swan Press fans might recognise a couple of the locations on this map. While Ashlar’s focus will be Gloamhold, not all adventures must be set there, and some of Raging Swan’s previous releases just screamed out to be included!

So, what do you think of the map? Does it work for you?

  1. Wow, that map is fantastic! Is there a version or layer without names, towns and roads? I’d love to “make it my own” and incorporate into my game world.

      1. That would be awesome, thanks! I tried to do stuff in paint and well… it isn’t nearly as cool as this one is.

  2. Great map and good to see the bigger picture with so many villages etc from Raging Swan products featured. And you’ve named one after where I live too

  3. It’s really good. It oozes “explore me”!

In your own campaign, what’s the climate? Is it France-like? British Isles like (!).
What about the lonely coast’s climate?

    1. The Lonely Coast book actually has two pages dedicated to generating the weather in the region. It’s basically like northern England with slightly more violent winter storms thrown in.

I run my own campaign in Greyhawk (Ratik) and the weather is suspiciously similar to the Lonely Coasts! (In fact, I may have killed two birds with one stone when designing those weather tables!)

  4. Outstanding map! I like your idea of a few more adventure sites, Is that an escarpment to the south?

    1. Thanks! That is an escarpment to the south and atop it stands the Forest of Gray Spires–a sinister place wreathed in unwholesome legends. The forest is set to be a major feature I think in my writings. It already appears (briefly) in Town Backdrop: Deksport

  5. his map is gorgeous! It incorporates so much Raging Swan goodness! I am eagerly anticipating Gloamhold in all its glory.

    1. I always like the idea of an escarpment. In my mind I always harken back to the early Johnny Weismuller Tarzan movies. The Great Escarpment where there were rumors of the Great White Ape dwelling.

      1. Sorry that was supposed to be attached to the entry above this one I somehow clicked the wrong button.

  6. With those hills (I assume they are hills) to the West you could mix in a few burial mounds. In fact you could do a whole GM Essentials book on burial mounds to go with it (oh I like that idea). Could be haunted by undead or broken into and inhabited by living monsters. Like a whole area of mini-dungeons.
