Borderland of Adventure #70: Exploring Dekspoint

At the end of last session, we left our heroes resting in Dekspoint after having carried out their initial investigation of the town. The party had quickly come to realise Dekspoint was not a typical town. Here slavery, squalor and casual violence – to say nothing of the orcs and goblins roaming the streets – were commonplace.

For the next week or so the party roamed the streets trying to get a feel for the town and its folk. They also began their investigations of the town’s power structure and tried to determine who was behind the attacks on Ratik the previous year. They also planned to visit the dragon temple, but had to wait until it was open as services only took place on certain days.

Although they met many of Dekspoint’s denizens–particularly it seemed tavern keepers and the like–they came no closer to learning what they needed to know until they arranged a meeting with Dimi– a man famed locally for knowing everything of import occurring in the town. In return for two elven king’s tears, he revealed–after fraught and tense negotiations–that the green dragon Vesicwyr was behind the attacks. This confirmed to the party what they have already gleaned from the parchment found while trapped on the elven demiplane of Sildeyuir. (Additionally, he warned the party of a bounty of 2,000 gp on Krorz head, placed by the redoubtable half-orc’s own father, Vazhror!) They also learnt the pirate Yorn (one of the town’s rulers) had some new captives–a pair of adventurers (Murar and Cinto) captured recently while helping to defend a merchant vessel against pirate attack.

Finally, the 4th of Richfest rolled round and the dragon temple was open for worship. On the day of the service, Krorz attended the ceremony earliy with Tzaran. Krorz was desirous of a restoration spell to replace life energy drained on his previous adventure. The only person able to cast such magics in the town was the dragon priest Sost. Sost drove a hard bargain. He didn’t want gold or magic, he wanted Janal– seemingly an innocent trader dead. Krorz readily agreed and set about staking out his target. In the end, however, the half-orc decided to not go through with the killing. He sensed there was something odd about Janal and instead returned to his companions to apprise them of the situation.

Thus, the party gathered in the Shrieking Phantom’s taproom for a secret colloquy. It seemed, they had several courses of possible action open to them:

  • Find out why Sost wanted Janal dead.
  • Kill Sost (and loot the dragon temple).
  • Rescue the imprisoned adventurers Murar and Cinto from their cells in the leader’s quarter.
  • Travel to Vesicwyr’s lair in the nearby woodlands – possibly atop or in a nearby mesa – and either slay the dragon or give her the Grail of Ashenyar as a bribe to cease her attacks on Ratik.

Sadly, the party seemed divided on what to do first and the conversation went on long into the night…
